Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is considered a fatal neurodegenerative disease. It is quite likely that an animal chiropractor may be the first doctor to see a dog that is showing the first signs of DM because the initial symptoms appear as mild mobility issues and gait abnormalities – things that we treat every day. Because of this, it is important that we have a familiarity with this disease so that we may inform an animal’s veterinarian when we suspect the possibility of its presence and have a strategy to best support the animal as the disease progresses.
